When gum disease is caught early enough, Dr. Samuel DeAngelo can treat it with a procedure called scaling and root planing.
- Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical gum disease treatment.
- Local anesthesia is used to numb the affected areas, providing comfort during the procedure.
- A combination of ultrasonic and manual instruments are used above and below the gum line to clear the affected areas of bacterial, plaque, and tartar accumulation.
- Home care will be more effective
- This procedure encourages the gums to naturally reattach to the teeth, reducing the depths of the pockets between the teeth and gums.
Treating Advanced Stages of Gum Disease
As gum disease advances, further bone is lost. At this point, a surgical procedure is often necessary to address the infection. Osseous surgery is one of such procedures, and involves cutting a flap in the gums so the deeper structure of the tooth can be accessed and cleaned. Benefits of osseous surgery include:
