Gum disease allows bacteria and infection access to your bloodstream. In addition to the damage it can cause to the health of your mouth, it can also have significant effects on your overall health, leading to or complicating the following conditions:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Certain kinds of cancer
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- Kidney disease
- Premature or low-weight birth babies
In this simple procedure, Dr. Samuel DeAngelo makes a small “pinhole” opening in the gum tissue near the area needing augmentation. He inserts a special instrument to loosen and pull the extra gum tissue into the areas of recession. Collagen strips are placed for healing and cosmetic results are immediate.

Of people who have not been to a dentist in five or more years, a quarter believe that it is only necessary to go when there is a problem. Unfortunately, gum disease often goes undetected in those who avoid the dentist, which can have serious consequences on the longevity of the teeth and overall health. Gum disease can lead to the loss of bone and teeth.
- Decreased pocket depths around the teeth
- Infected tissue can be trimmed away
- Roots and bone discrepancies can be smoothed for reattachment of gum tissues
- Home care will be more effective
- Infection is arrested, allowing for a healthier mouth
Periodontal plastic surgery is another name for procedures that involve reducing the extra gum tissue around your teeth, otherwise known as crown lengthening.
Dr. Samuel DeAngelo is a periodontist who specializes in treatments involving the gums and is happy to offer periodontal plastic surgery in our Cary, NC practice. There are two main types of crown lengthening procedures, both of which are used to improve the appearance of your smile and your oral health.

You might be avoiding the dentist because of a traumatic experience as a child, or even as an adult. You are not alone! Unfortunately, like others, you may be currently in pain and ignoring nature’s warning sign that something is very wrong. Do not let fear of the dentist keep you from getting the treatment you need. You can benefit from sedation dentistry if you have experienced any of the following:
- High dental anxiety
- Traumatic past dental experiences
- Very sensitive teeth
- A severe gag reflex
- Embarrassment about your teeth
- A fear of shots and needles
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, “One out of every two American adults aged 30 and over has periodontal disease, according to recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).” Nearly half of the American population has a chronic inflammatory disease that is eating away their gums and jaw bone. If periodontal disease is left untreated, the disease can lead to devastating tooth and bone loss.
- Minimal discomfort
- Reduced bleeding and inflammation
- Less recovery time
- Faster healing
- Saves teeth
- Regenerates bone
Once a tooth is lost, the jaw bone starts to deteriorate and will cause other teeth to drift out of place. Your face may even take on a sunken appearance. Dental bridges and dentures do not retain the jaw bone. Once your jaw bone is lost, it does not grow back on its own and will only deteriorate further without a dental implant to help maintain its density.
- Dental implants save and stabilize your jaw bone
- Dental implants are a permanent solution
- Speak with confidence
- Customize your care
- No need for bothersome removable appliances
- Eat the foods you love.
